1990-91 Edmonton Oilers          posted 12-16-07

Mark Messier - CCM Airknit, size 54. 90/91 3 set identifier written in black sharpie in the collar. This jersey has fantastic  provenance, it originally came from the Michael Wexler collection who purchased an entire run of Oilers jerseys directly from Oilers owner Peter Pocklington which was later sold through MeiGray, it was originally first sold in May of 1998. It comes with an LOA copy from the Edmonton Oilers to Michael Wexler, by then owner of the Oilers Peter Pocklington with MeiGray registration number 101306.  The MeiGray certificate of registration accompanies that letter also with the same 101306 number. It also comes with an LOA from Milt Byron of Byron's Hockeyland and it also comes with a detailed LOA from the Spirit of the Game detailing the jersey's wear, provenance and detailed photo matching.

But what sets this jersey apart from other Mark Messier's in the hobby is not just the great great provenance behind it, but its 100% iron clad photo match .  The hobbies has put 100% photo matched jerseys on a pedestal and command the top dollars in the industry. The photo match is from March 13, 1991 vs. the New York Islanders which is the Oilers 5th to last home regular season game that year. This jersey likely would also have been worn into the playoffs. To support this hypotheses is when this photo was taken March 13, 1991 you can clearly see that some of the remaining un-repaired holes are not yet stitched up and that the jersey shows more use then in the photo to the right, meaning the jersey was worn for more games beyond this March 13 date. The Oilers play 13 more home games regular season and playoffs beyond the March 13th date.

The Photo Match -  You can clearly see on the photo with the arrows all the identifiers of the matches from the photo to the jersey.  You can see the wear on the hem matches, the wear on the side seam matches, the wear on the elbow matches.

I have seen a few Messier Oilers jerseys and this ranks as one of the best I have ever seen, wear, photo matched and provenance it does not get any better then this.
